Okay? Call me immoral if you want, but not all pains are created equal and deserve equal compassion.

I think the application of compassion varies less so on the level of pain and even someone being good/bad. It is more dependent on a force being enacted upon you vs you initiating a force on yourself/someone else. e.g. A drunk driver dying in a wreck that kills another driver.

Had a similar thought earlier about empathy towards people who commit monstrous acts. Not that they shouldn't be punished (they should,) but that we should try to understand them and why they became the way that they are.

Won't happen. People empathize with those they share something in common

Also difference between good and bad here is good ones reciprocate, bad ones don't. We expect returns

I think it solely depends on the individual. There's certain pain that people choose to endure, that they keep going back to, and they accept as their fate. Others, who have pain thrust upon them, who fight, and endure setbacks, need compassion.

“Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It's a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.” ― Pema Chödrön

I think Compassion is usually a relationship between the healer and the wounded. And its ok. In fact, I think its great and necessary.

While I generally agree with you, I would draw the line at people who are intentionally or inherently evil. Stalin does not deserve compassion for murdering Kulaks. People are not equally good or bad.
