I suspect there's high mental illness in sex work not because sex work causes mental illness, but because sex work is more likely to be performed by people who are willing to go 'against the grain' for money - common in poverty, poor support networks, or general life difficulty.

I feel it might also be that it takes a specific personality to perform the mental reset necessary to do some jobs every day. It could be because you enjoy it, it could also be due to a form of sociopathy or unhealthy coping habits.

Interesting. What about social workers who forsake societal expectations of making great sums of money in order to help the less fortunate? They certainly go against the grain.
