No. We just call more things "mental illness" as a means to try and alleviate ourselves from the responsibility of our actions.

fewer early childhood deaths overall, better clinicians, and less social stigma probably contribute to it being treated more and talked about more openly.

Probably just greater awareness and acknowledgement. Kinda like police brutality.

Serious mainly genetic mental illness probably not. But a lot of modern mental illness in previous times would probably have been classified as being a whiny bitch.

My guess is that rates of mental illness probably have increased slightly. But the diagnosis rate has increased dramatically. Got to keep all those shrinks, counselors, and therapist employed!
