Given you don't know the person closely - should you require proof before you believe someone claiming to be a victim of rape?

If we're not talking like being a juror in a court, then no. I'm gonna believe anybody that says they were raped.

The investigation would be invasive enough without random person(me) deciding I need to see evidence before I give them sympathy.

If all they want is me to listen/ accept their story (i.e. not be the instrument of justice/ retribution) then it really doesn't matter.

Depends on the claim. If someone tells me that they got raped by an uncle when the were 12, there is no harm in me just accepting it. /1
