imo one of the best ways too look at whether or not culture accepts something is to look at how it's used in advertisements

True, although some advertisements targeted for specific groups often play with stuff that may only be widely accepted within those groups.

that's true! I think my heuristic only works for media that's very general - i.e., fast food, banking, generic clothing lines, etc.
