to be fair, I don't think 'saying a racial slur' is a sufficient condition to be considered a racist.

Nah. Most them have next to no meaning. A bastardization of a color...a shortening of the country of origin...
I only use them in reference.

Just because there are "no social repercussions" doesn't make it palettable. For example, in the South during Jim Crow, no repercussions.
Agreed. I should have wrote, "fewer repercussions in the Jim Crow-era".
