It doesn't take a court proceeding to ruin someone's life, though - reputation is powerful.
I know a guy who lost his ROTC scholarship for a false accusation of rape. Even though the judge ruled in his favor.

I have a friend right now undergoing a false accusation of rape and it is absolutely terrible to watch

I knew a venue manager who's accuser never went to police, but told bands that venue promotes rape culture. Had their last show last week.

It's infuriating because we have no cultural attitudes in place to seriously question/investigate whether an accusation is made with malice
