What are the theories for why (even nonbrutal) rape is treated as an atrocity while nonsexual, horrifically violent assault, isn't?

I would think both are atrocities. I'm curious as to your use of "non", you're defining it by what it isn't? Why?

Part of it has to do with how're we're socialized and the other part has to do with psychology. Love to talk w/ you about it.

rape is a lot more invasive than non-sexual assault. You shouldn't do either, but rape is more traumatic psychologically.

Because if you get violently assaulted as a guy, people USUALLY won't say it's your fault and you were asking for it

The whole idea of rapists being ostracized in prison while murderers are respected never made sense to me. Both r scum.

Obvious theory: that's not true. Violent assault is treated as an atrocity and rape isn't, so all the controversy's about rape.
