The actual concrete difference is that the USSR was authoritarian, and the guiding ethos of the left is anti-hierarchy -- "Stateless, classless, moneyless" Modern leftists narcissistically insist that if only they were in charge, it would work this time.

I assume modern day young ppl who think communism is cool have some explanation for the soviet union where it's "not really communism", but I don't know what they say is actually the concrete difference. What are the ways lethal communism is diff from trendy communism?

Leftists vary in how much and what kinds of hierarchy they find acceptable. The ethos is guiding but not exact. Leftist justifications for hierarchy usually hinge on reducing hierarchy overall - e.g. using the state to minimize economic hierarchy.

It depends on what you mean by hierarchy and which leftists. Marxists, in general, view the state as an instrument of the ruling class. Once both have been abolished, they argue, workers will control the means of production and people will be free.
