just tried to download an old return that i need to fix, but the website kept giving me an error. I contacted support and the lady was like "welp that sucks, you're shit out of luck, no way to get it"
this was the sign from god i needed to never use turbotax again

I've learned that with all things digital, save own copies. nothing digital you ever do, is ever truly owned or backed up forever. It's gonna get lost eventually. the only reliable backup to anything, is your own.
