I have a lot of sympathy for ppl who cheat, but not for the class of cheaters who would refuse an open arrangement cause they'd be jealous if their partner banged someone else

unless it was agreed upon at the outset that it's an open arrangement, i don't have any sympathy for people who cheat. even if they agree to an open arrangement after the fact. it reflects very poorly on one's character. self restraint and loyalty are essential attributes.

imagine saying this about gay ppl entering into straight marriages 30 years ago. technically you're correct, but we're also dealing with massive cultural pressure and stigma if you try to have the kind of relationship that's right for you. Prob can't even admit it to yourself.

Sympathy for what? Wouldn't it be better to just dump the person before cheating? I always hear "it's not that simple", yet it usually is that simple. They should have had an adult conversation disclosing what they want, then make their decision instead of just hurting their SO.

i think that society has dealt a bad hand to people who disprefer exclusivity — the socially acceptable default is total exclusivity, which sucks — so i do get why someone would feel pressured into agreeing to more exclusivity than they want

The operative word is cheat. Implies lying. How can that be good? Being unfaithful so complicated usually because unhappy at home. Better to divorce! Never saw open relationship end well. Quickie Situational screwing different. Travel! Movie set! Fashion photography. Sigh!

The number of replies to this in which it's assumed that having sympathy for someone indicates you think they did nothing wrong is why we don't have nicer things.
