I think I would really like to have kids, except most ppl with kids seem to have an unhappier life, no free time, much higher stress, and a worse relationship with their partner. That's a scary thing to willingly enter into.

Think about the word parenting as an active verb, and become a parent only if parenting itself sounds like something you would enjoy doing all day every day for years. Like any art, you need to love the daily, life long practice of it if you want to be any good.

Get a big dog to foster see how you manage. You don’t sound like being mommy suits you. Lots of us didn’t procreate. You could learn the tasks required, to raise the child, do you want to? Spend some time where children are for long periods of time. Maybe an event? Ask a shrink.
It’s absolutely fulfilling. Odd thing is that the unmitigated devotion that you feel towards that small being transcends aversion to the mundane. You may find it a source of empowerment taking care of your progeny. In any event it’s a wholly different paradigm. In a good way.

So initially this is pretty much the reason “I think it would be fun/fulfilling”. At some point it (should) fully transfer over to “because this is about their life, not mine”. And when you get there- that’s when it comes home; it’s not you at all, it’s always been them. 🤯
