Don't have them spaced out in perfectly regular intervals. Allow the spacing to represent time.

Just enter the X values as 1, 2, 3, 4 years. Then after exporting image, white out the numbers you don't care about in MSPaint. A lot of figures in production undergo this kind of touchup.

Use as x axis the median of the interval expressed in some unit (like months), then relabel the ticks
