I think all of the "the first amendment doesn't apply here" people should be on a list.
Those are suppose to be general principles we all agree to, if your goal is to abuse those principles in private industry we should be aware.

I'm not sure I agree with this? I immensely value freedom of speech, but I've always seen the first amendment as a kinda technical rule about government. I'd rather we come up with a different phrase than the first amendment to refer to the general value of letting ppl talk

The first amendment is the legal expression of Enlightenment ideals about free speech. If people have a problem with it, they’ve got a problem with the ideological system that underpins liberal democracy.

sure, but it sounds like people don't have a problem with it, they're just saying it doesn't apply. Like, I have a "no lying" principle that doesn't apply in circumstances where I'm dealing with people who want to hurt me. not within the scope of the rule.

and to be clear I strongly think free speech should be allowed on private platforms in most circumstances and ppl default way too much to censorship and this is bad, I'm just saying I also think it's correct that the first amendment doesn't apply and we should use a diff phrase
It’s both a rule and a norm is my point I suppose. The rule only applies to state actors. The norm is something people apply in life or biz. It’s been fine for censorial politics to infect corporations for the last ten years, kind of cool for libertarian politics to do so now.
