i get intellectually that other ppl sometimes "do not want to talk about that right now" and i think my gut doesn't really grok this, like i always have a suspicion that they do in fact want to talk about it and are just doing a polite thing and secretly hoping i ask them more qs

i very rarely, if ever, "don't want to talk about this right now", i think? i think i feel usually pretty down to plunge my face into a bowl of horror at most times

(er to clarify, "don't want to talk about this right now" in the sense of "wait i'm busy/focusing on this other thing give me a second" makes sense and I do this and is not the kind of thing im trying to refer to)

Why should puritans divulge their secrets? Is someone going to pay them, or something? Or maybe that social reward that ‘crazy’ vulnerable people feel on Oprah will be made tangible to the rest of them?

Taboo simply means a thing needs to be talked about. The proverbial elephant in the room. A general heuristic that I find useful is if someone is willing to actually discuss taboo topics, we are more likely to be friends.
