i get intellectually that other ppl sometimes "do not want to talk about that right now" and i think my gut doesn't really grok this, like i always have a suspicion that they do in fact want to talk about it and are just doing a polite thing and secretly hoping i ask them more qs

i don't instinctively grasp that some things "shouldn't be talked about" in social settings, that some topics or concepts are off limits. i generally respect this if ppl make requests, i dont have to understand to honor boundaries, but it's not an automatic awareness for me

(er to clarify, "don't want to talk about this right now" in the sense of "wait i'm busy/focusing on this other thing give me a second" makes sense and I do this and is not the kind of thing im trying to refer to)

If you ever watch anime I think you'd like Made in Abyss, the typical review of it is "great story but the author clearly has disgusting fetishes, I wish I could recommend it strongly to more people without getting strange looks".

Trying to think of last time I don’t want to talk about right now: most things when I’m very hungry and trying to get food, I don’t want to talk about decisions that won’t be changed, I don’t want to talk about “what’s new with you”, I generally don’t like to recap events

It's very rare of me to shut down interest in anything going on in my life, bc I take it as a great compliment. However, that gullibility's been taken advantage of, so now if it is really something I'm still struggling to process I shut it down, and demand that it be respected.
