i get intellectually that other ppl sometimes "do not want to talk about that right now" and i think my gut doesn't really grok this, like i always have a suspicion that they do in fact want to talk about it and are just doing a polite thing and secretly hoping i ask them more qs

i very rarely, if ever, "don't want to talk about this right now", i think? i think i feel usually pretty down to plunge my face into a bowl of horror at most times

i don't instinctively grasp that some things "shouldn't be talked about" in social settings, that some topics or concepts are off limits. i generally respect this if ppl make requests, i dont have to understand to honor boundaries, but it's not an automatic awareness for me

(er to clarify, "don't want to talk about this right now" in the sense of "wait i'm busy/focusing on this other thing give me a second" makes sense and I do this and is not the kind of thing im trying to refer to)

It means "talking about this is going to upset me and I don't want to be upset right now because I want to be able to enjoy X, Y or Z"

if you don’t want to talk about it then u have to talk about it
But there are right and wrong contexts if it gets too painful or weird

There are definitely reasons to not want to talk about something. Both emotional and practical.
And even in the case of secretly wanting to talk about, there are still reasons why you recognize that its better not to. I encounter this a LOT

Unless I’m doing something important, there is never a “I don’t want to talk about it” time for me.
