the degree to which innovation in even the slightest of edgy spaces has been curtailed due to apple is really underappreciated, I think. If you're making an app, you have to get approval from apple for any chance at success; they're like a defacto government

On this issue it seems like it is actually an improvement. Android phones allow for alternative app stores (fdroid), which allows a developer to distribute their app without Googles approval.

Android at least has much more PWA support in the browser, and their people have Project Fugu which is aimed at allowing all app features to be done via Javascript. And there's sideloading.
