A lot of people I know do instagram to keep their friends and family in touch with what's going on in their life. When I open insta, I mostly see people I know irl post stuff they've been doing recently, places they've visited, etc.

Pictures don't matter much on insta anymore, so if you care about reaching an audience reels are what they prioritize now.

You can either go the frequent-poster route, or have 20-50 select posts. You can use story highlights to add specific interests / things you do.
Photos should be aesthetic, and should reflect some of your best pictures.
