when i was a child, i saw old photos of my mom in 80s fashion, which to me was hideous. i couldn't believe she would have done that to herself. i then became *paranoid* - what fashions of the day would *i* one day look back on like 'i cant believe i used to wear that'? 1

"People used to think x was normal, but with greater perspective we realize it's terrible, which means what thing right now do *I* think is normal but will actually turn out to to be stupid?" has been a LOUD thing in my brain for as long as i can remember 2/

and is partially why im obsessed with moral-philosophy style twitter polls. our moral sensibilities of today will turn out to be the 80s shoulderpads of yesterday.

I don't think it realizing it's terrible, just that fashion inherently has to always be changing and therefore what's "in" now becomes normalized and looks cool for a bit but once you see it enough it gets boring and the cycle continues

You can't control what others think about you. You can control how you react to other's opinions. That's for both then and now. It's not easy (and may even be far more difficult than I know for women) to avoid fashion that doesn't fit and embrace the mistakes that did fit then.

Yeah 80s look funny now, but on average most fashion trends come and go in cycles (with some alterations obv). So I’m not sure it’s about greater perspective, unless we keep losing it.

Greater or less perspective. Difficult to say anything other than different perspective. Were you to hop into a delorian and go back to the 50s, it wouldn't take long to become accustomed to that either. Probably a few days or less.
