every time I've looked into an egalitarian claim about an indigenous culture I come away disappointed. usually it's pointing at a small handful of rights women had and ignoring all the other significant ways they were disempowered
I think it's pretty well established that hunter gatherers had egalitarian gender roles, more developed indigenous cultures like Aztec and Maya might be different
