wow i somehow just assumed all magma was the same substance, when if i'd thought for two seconds id have realized there's different types of magma depending on what types of rocky compositions are melted, and that different magmas have different behaviors/properties

Well... that's more like a lava classification. But presumably there is some continuity between magma and lava types.

TIL magma has gas in it. I knew there were many kinds of stone and glass in it, but I didn't think it had gasses. I guess if I had stopped to think about pumace for a minute, I might have figured that out, but I don't spend nearly as much time thinking about pumace as one should.

On some outer solar system bodies, the crust is made of ice and the "magma" is water! To be fancy it gets called "cryomagma" (/cryolava/cryovolcanism). And there's a decent chance that some asteroids had iron volcanism early in solar system history.
