The people who wrote Primate Societies are brilliant, but 40 years is too old for a synthesis of primate science to really be worth it. Nobody had even seriously studied bonobos at this point.

definitely GEB; The Selfish Gene next - mostly because, while by now it's in the water supply, there's a bunch of subtlety and beauty that gets lost in the memefication process.

And BTW, it took me a year reading it the first time too, while the second was a breeze: the trick is knowing which ones are the lsd chapters and which the amphetamine ones.
