I think you're onto something. It's a trained norm I think. It is what is seen in media. Personally, a naked body speaks louder than lace. Maybe it was a fantasy thing or a striptease that they may be into.

I would say it's more erotic by virtue of its intentionality. Bras and panties are ordinary and unremarkable - special lacy nighties are very deliberately erotic and thus invitational. (The discomfort may even serve as an honest signal - "Check the lengths I've gone to.")
