Yeah but AI today is a lot more like a police department than a Death Star - the places where racial bias causes problems are way more likely and pertinent than breaking the world

You are experiencing the problem first hand. There will always be people who say "it sounds like you want skyscrapers to be RACIST" and so the whole field remains confused and we remain doomed. If it's any consolation we would probably be doomed anyway.
