I think the psychology of these ‘interests’ may not be as varied as the manifestations. To pick from your examples, persons into being afraid & into a disinterested partner both want to feel powerlessness or embarrassment Interesting exchange in ‘Ex Machina’ (external stimuli):
Nathan: Caleb, what's your type? Caleb: Of girl? Nathan: No, salad dressing. Yeah, of girl; what's your type of girl? You know what, don't even answer that. Let's say its black chicks. Okay, that's your thing. For the sake of argument, that's your thing, okay? Why is that your thing? Because you did a detailed analysis of all racial types and you cross-referenced that analysis with a points-based system? No! You're just attracted to black chicks. A consequence of accumulated external stimuli that you probably didn't even register as they registered with you.

not sure; i also had this intuition, and sort of 'searched for it' when interviewing people with obscure kinks, but it didn't seem... obviously true? like it might be true still, im not saying its definitive, but i didnt find a glowing clear 'ah yes it traces back to this'

Well I guess I was making two different points. I agree that the genesis of why someone's into something is mysterious. But my first point was that a lot of fetishes can be 'grouped' into things like submission, masochism etc But yeah kinks like latex or feet are kinda random
