update: when u flush one toilet, the other toilet gurgles water into the bowl. today the shower was clogged, water sitting a few inches deep, not draining. i flush the toilet, almost nothing in it, it clogs. i plunge it. i turn around and the shower has instantly drained. wat??

3. He installed a 2nd bathroom - not on the other side of the house that needs it, but DIRECTLY NEXT TO THE ORIGINAL BATHROOM. The bthrm is so small the sink pushes you to the side when you sit down, but at least now you can make eye contact with your buddy when you both poo

Aella, this is multi-issues. Get recommendations for a good plumber. Tell him the problems on the phone. If he's good, he likely can't come right away, but getting it fixed right is worth it.

Thinking about this more while walking the dog, your commenters who mention vents are onto something. I suspect the light you see in the drain is from a vent, but when he added a bathroom he may not have properly vented it. Only way to fix it is have a quality plumber look.
