If you "have to accept" it, the situation is clearly damaging to the relationship. So it's better to damage only one relationship instead of ruining two.

Speaking from a perspective of a former open relationship, it was less awkward for me when it was with someone I wasn't closely associated with. And vice versa. Bringing best friends into it just made it weird to hang out normally again. Just from my own experiences.

Best friend has a trust factor involved, but the friendship would also dissolve by default. At least for me.
