religion is an actual thing, it's not just culture with some cutsey beliefs stamped on top of it. "Culture" alone has never made parents cut off contact with children they loved out of fear they would burn for an eternity if they didn't

If you’re going to say something like “people have killed people because they think God commanded it” then ok. But that’s hardly interesting. People kill people for many reasons.

It’s certainly worth noting that some metaphysical systems are totalitarian, religion is usually metaphysical, and so one must guard against its totalitarian forms.
A lot of the problematic tendencies we see in religion tend to rear their head in non-religious subcultures.
This makes me think that the religion itself often isn't the problem. Instead the problem is something inherent in the way humans behave in societies.
