It is the same thing. And I note you're also minimizing a need for basic decency by calling it something that just makes people feel good. Your whole essay here is an attempt to justify discrimination against trans people who you or anyone else might judge as not "passing."

not the same thing. This is a recurrent issue; people take diff things and collapse them down into a single thing. Complete lack of nuance! It's also a technique to insist the other person is arguing for a worse thing then they actually are, so u have a strawman to fight against

If you refuse to recognize someone's gender, you're refusing to recognize their existence. This is not complicated. You're a form and survey person, what's the usual first or second question in most surveys?
