a tweet that starts with "am I the only one" and gets 1 million likes must be expressing a truly universal sentiment. does this say something important about Gen Z or is it just a meme? I can actually think of several possibilities and I honestly don't know which ones are true

THEORY 1 white collar work is great and zoomers know it, most of these 1 million likes were from people on their phone during those "exhausting" 8-9 work hours, this sort of dramatic collective griping is just a fun cultural expression to participate in

I think I'd actually bet against you on this, that the majority of the gen zers agreeing with this tweet either didn't like it while on job, and that their jobs are more exhausting than you'd guess.

the oldest genzers are what, 23? 24? probably just finishing college; most are likely working jobs to either put themselves through college, or are not going to college. Those kind of jobs usually emphasize "always being busy" in ways that make it exhausting

I would have LOVED a nonexhausting job at that age but every single other person I knew in my age range working a job had an actually legitimately exhausting job. Nobody had a white collar job.

the oldest zoomers are 27. Shelby is 25 with a degree in mechanical engineering, so she's a zoomer with (likely) a white collar job. I don't know the breakdown of the 1 million likes, but I've seen this sentiment mostly expressed on Twitter by college educated under-30s

Hi! 35, dev, from Germany - in my experience this sentiment is widely shared by anyone below the boomer generation (ya know, the last one where a single earner could comfortably pay for a whole family) - Germany has a 40h maximum (!) work week...
