Should do a split on American vs non-American. Americans seem to much more personally identify with their jobs than euros.

Depends on if I have a high status or low status profession

I usually say "so what do you do" and if they start describing their job, I cut them off and say "no, I mean what do you do with your life". Usually gets a pause and reevaluation that opens up a much more detailed and interesting conversation

I hate this, if you have no imagination just talk about the weather or whatever, don't make the other feel like they are on a job interview or something. smh
