maybe i'm really slow but is part of the reason people get so mad at stuff I say that I find innocent is that they're parsing my beliefs as being *social*? like they interpret the beliefs as existing for fully social reasons and don't see the actual raw belief in there?

I think it's just disgust, disgust as a moral value. Sometimes I read a post of yours and it conjures up a vivid image that I respond to with disgust. It's not rational, maybe not voluntary. I have to rationalize myself into allowing things that disgust me.

That's too many levels of cognition. It's "I feel disgust" -> "make disgust go away". You are the source of the disgust, so they will try to use the "social enforcement" hammer on you to make you stop.

If they thought you were just trying to trigger their disgust, they'd probably be less sanctimonious. I'll bet a lot of those opinions are: here's something that people think are profane (not just disgusting), but no one is harmed. Should it be banned?
