can u imagine this framing if the data had shown black women made up 70% of suicides? "Interestingly, suicidologists, psychologists, and sociologists are beginning to wonder if there's something about black femininity that's hurting women themselves"
Quote Tweet
Increasingly, suicidologists, psychologists, and sociologists are beginning to wonder if there is something about White American masculinity is hurting men themselves. That data and the sociological research attempting to explain it underlie this piece.

Seems unnecessarily racialised, given that macho type norms don't tend to differ too much across ethnoracial lines in the US in terms of things like propensity to engage with certain emotions, I wouldn't imagine. But I guess I could be wrong about that.

It's all relative to the power of the social group you belong to isn't it? If your group has no power you're more likely impacted by the group with power. If your group has power you're more likely impacted by internal norms of your group. Hence the question being asked.

I can imagine it. It would be as ridiculous as you frame it to be. But you can't just plug in socio-economic and ethnic/racial groups into a statement like that without understanding where the "themselves" came from. We all should be wondering where masculinity becomes toxic!

Normally I cringe at needless racialization of complex subjects, but if it really is 70%, that’s pretty significant. I think culture should definitely be considered a possible factor.
