One big change in my twitter use due to follower count increase was that I engage with respondents *way* less. I used to like... have debates with people who disagreed, or clarify in response to comments more, but I'm increasingly feeling like twitter is not the forum for that.

I suspect a bit of it is feeling like... vulnerability in people being able to make me respond to them, or something? Which I really didn't mind before but now it really feels more like a vulnerability, like opening myself up to an audience all sitting there with knives

Debates which used to feel invigorating now are more exhausting; some part of my mental energy is going into more... caution? Less throwing stuff to see what sticks? Imagine a nice discussion with a friend in your living room except hundreds of people are waiting to pounce on you

I guess it doesn't scale, so one needs to aggregate a more general response by subtweeting a genre of replies

This may have something to do with the algorithm deciding which replies you actually see.

The problem is that there isn't enough room to get out a thought, but some people treat twitter like a blog and try to do it anyway.

Totally agree with you here. Twitter is shit as a debate forum or “town hall” and I’m really sick of people acting like it works for that.
