It's kinda weird that real racists exist - like serious "other ethnicities are inherently bad", kind of racists. I consciously belive they're real but some part of my brain thinks its so silly they must be a mythological creature, kinda like flat earthers or televangelists

About 4% of the US are overt white supremacists. So they are definitely real, but somewhat uncommon. Still, 12 million people

it’s easier to understand/believe if you think of it as mostly a form of “cope for being mediocre” rather than a form of conspiracy theory or grift

I think sometimes this is transgression signaling? People running the algorithm "Find out what Society says is the worst, scariest thing you can do, then do that."
I don't know what percentage of modern racists this accounts for, but I would be completely shocked if it was <5%.

Yes, also media/people don't distinguish the people who literally think causally that race -> outcome, from the people who simply use race as a lazy short cut to get at other confounding factors (culture, country of origin, recent ancestors who were slaves, etc).

I suspect there's a division of racism from ideology for a lot of them.
Real convos: "I know it's fucked up, but thats how I am. I've had so many bad experiences with [black people] that I can't see them any other way now"

If you can fathom the idea of someone saying other groups of people are different, then you can fathom someone not liking certain aspects of those differences, or even just generally being annoyed that people in charge of billions in capital would have you believe it isn't true.

Go to BitChute and read the comments under videos on race, ethnicity, (((them))), and you'll get a whole new picture of humanity. I do it periodically to keep myself from living in a comfortable bubble.
