The school shooting in Texas is more surprising to me now that I live in Austin; the amount of people who concealed carry here is really high, and I'd assume small-town Texas would have an even higher %. I'm surprised nobody seemed to be carrying at the school!

Have you ever read about mass shootings? Lots of the minute-by-minute descriptions seem like they have tons of opportunities for defense if you had a gun. Not all moments are opportunities, but some are!

This is an example of tragedy of the commons. Yes, in isolation, if you're the only one doing it, concealed carry might make you safer. But: living in a society where you are allowed to concealed carry, is also a society where shootings will be dramatically more common.

You ancedote is unfortunately not data. You have many legitimate threats that reasonably justify weapons. Everyday people are much less likely to need weapons for self defense. Gun owners as a group are far more likely to shoot themself or an acquaintance than a stranger.

In military and law enforcement tactical training you learn how fluid and unnatural a gun fight truly is... Even having significant civilian range practice, for most people a gun doesn't make you more likely to function like in the movies.
