i almost wish the general public never really got wind of selection bias, cause at this point i feel like i hear more people misunderstanding how selection bias works and using it as a way to feel superior to studies, than judiciously using it as criticism when it's needed.

It is if they imply the effect detected applies to a much more general population. If you survey elderly Spanish grandma's but claim your results apply to all humanity... like the standard r/science topic then that's a problem.
