How does increasing lung capacity work, like biologically? is it like practicing to get a muscle stronger? what in your body adapts to greater breathing efficiency?

well not sure, but before they put my middle sibling into surgery they gave him these little balls in tubes to blow on to strengthen the lungs

it's not a muscle strength exercise.
it's about the body, specifically your lungs, adapting to less oxygen being available.

From what I understand, you can't change how much blood is oxygenated (ie lung efficiency). But you can change how much oxygen your body uses, through excersize.

alveoli are air sacks on the very tips of your tertiary bronchioles. their health and capacity is directly related to their elasticity. increasing lung capacity isn’t getting a “lung muscle” stronger, it’s making your alveoli more elastic and able to stretch bigger
