I had an intermittent freakout for a while when I both believed I'd seen a crescent moon in the middle night and also couldn't figure out how that was possible and all my friends didn't understand why this was so important to me

this is how I ended up on the desert floor of a festival in Spain arranging sunscreen bottles and flashlights and feeling like a conspiracy theorist as I tried to convince everyone that nothing made any sense and feeling like reality was breaking down around me

If the sun isn't too far below the horizon and the moon isn't too far above it... There's a great app, SkyView, for when you really need to know where the sun (or Mars, or ISS) is at night.

I answered yes to your poll without thinking, then as soon as I clicked it realized that it was impossible. I'm usually much better with astronomical phenomena

How'd you settle it internally? My guess is the easiest answer is we feel like it's "middle of the night" fairly early in the night?

I’ve had a couple moon freak-outs for unexplained reasons as well. I wonder if this is common.

No need to panic; that was probably an Aldebaranian landing shuttle. Those Aldebaranian shapeshifters just looove music festivals. (Did you see a group of people acting strangely later in the evening? Like intoxicated, but in an odd way? That was probably them.)
