If academics want their research taken seriously they shouldn't hide it in a journal, they should publish their write-up and code somewhere that's subject to serious peer review, like a blog.
I've been kind of thinking the opposite unfortunately, like wondering if the only way for the normal public to take me seriously is if I write confusingly and publish in a journal
I can't imagine this working. The publishing process would hammer your ideas into a pre-configured mold and even then the likelihood that anyone would report out of them would only be a function your twitter/blog fame.
Yes and no. Publish in peer-reviewed journals but write beautifully. Academics don’t write poorly on purpose, but because they’re able to get away with it. Your background will instantly give you credibility. Prove to academics you can join them (and beat them).
Publishing a paper gives you major adult points. I think you should go through the process but after you've submitted the paper write a blog post for normal people and link to the paper.
