I'm an AI safety noob, but it did freak me out a bit that Dall-e etc. seemed to freak others out so much. By my view, if people had a generally good sense of AI risk, this *shouldn't* have increased alarm, and it lowers my trust in the the general predictions of the public.

You had trust in the predictions of the general public when they didn't have the ability to enforce that prediction?

I'm often cautious when publicly arguing that AGI poses an existential risk, because our arguments aren't as detailed as I'd like. But I should remember that the counterarguments are *much* worse - I've never seen a plausible rebuttal to the core claims. That's terrifying.

it pains me that the default reaction to amazing new tech has moved away from wonder and amazement - towards fear and hostility.

Most people, even those into AI risk have a lot of uncertainty in the timelines, and developments like dall-e suggest the timelines are likely on the shorter side of what they could have been.

I'm not afraid of AI going rogue. I'm afraid of people using it as a weapon.
