If you’re a newbie to programming and you’re trying to learn data science on your own, you’re going to have a *much* less frustrating time learning R vs Python.

I was seriously so 50/50 on whether I should learn python or R, I kept flip flopping between the two. Eventually I picked python cause people kept saying it would have more value in the future beyond just data analysis.

That makes a lot of sense to me. I think that either one will probably meet your data analysis needs, and the extra day or two of wrestling with Python will not matter in the long run.

I’m in the exact same boat as you, and made the same choice. I get the sense academic research prefer R, while private sector companies see more python (for those extended use cases)

People say lots of things. R can translate to Python (Jupyter Notebook) later, anyway.
It's a good choice. Python will pay more dividends in the future than R
You chose correctly.
Also, learning a new language isnt hard once you master couple of them, but if you are a noob you should 100% start with pyhton and then branch out.
