"Do you worry that AI will be able to replace software engineers soon?"
I would be thrilled!
The value that would be unlocked would be outrageously high, and knowing how to harness that would be even more important.
Sadly... no.
I am very bullish on AI in the long-run, but the smartest people on the planet have spent decades and billions of dollars trying to conquer, "Make this car go straight on the freeway without hitting anyone" and we aren't fully there yet
Is this true? My guess is that making self driving cars is a bigger challenge for more complicated reasons than coding. My guess would be we'll see AI at the level of decent coders in two years
No.
I have Github Copilot and it is basically very strong autocomplete.
Coding is nearly as complicated as speaking and being a "decent coder" is AGI. Self driving cars are hard but not nearly as hard as that.
It’s a fundamental misunderstanding of what current AI does though… coding something that has already been coded well once will be within reach, but large scale creative code will not. Same as writing novels.
