As a socially progressive slut/sex worker/moral nihilist, I am very pro abortion. I grew up among anti-abortion acitivsts - for example, my mom once spent time in jail for blocking abortion clinic doors. I think those people are wrong, but I also understand their views. 1/

Imagine the Opposing Side is tryin to pass a law to make it legal to kill the elderly, or very sick people. You'd probably feel horrified, and any arguments they made to justify it would seem absurd and selfish. This is really, actually how many of them feel about fetuses. 2/

And that... really sucks, cause what do you do about it? It's not an easy argument, and it's probably why the abortion issue has become a decisive issue in a lot of areas; conservative people are slowly changing in many ways, but it seems like they're stable re: abortion.

I deeply empathize with this, from personal experience as you know - but 1) this is already the case in other countries and people here seem largely fine with it; I don't see widespread arguing to free the children of Malaysia or whatever

You can argue for abortion even if you think fetuses are people. It's just a question of if you value bodily autonomy over saving lives. The US clearly does because it does NOT have forced blood donations or kidney transplants.

Would you really be content with knowing that your state doesn’t murder elderly people, but the state right next to you does? Even if the government that allowed the murder of elderly people was a small country on the other side of the world, wouldn’t you want to stop it?

Yeah arguing abortion is pointless. the two sides have completely opposite positions at a fundamental level. Engaging with the other side is a waste of time. That said, "just move" is never a good solution to anything.
