would it be horrible of me to just...not let my kids have pets we have two cats. they're needy enough. my parents were waaaaay too permissive about pets and it pretty much ended in rehoming or death/neglect every time, with a handful of exceptions...

I know this is just semantic, but IMO if you have cats then your kids do have pets?

ah I was thinking of the thing where adults get pets *for* the individual kids, starting with "easy" (read: short lived and less sad if they die) animals common thing growing up in my area, but from the replies it seems it's not universal 😅

ya my 'general family' usually had 1-3 cats while i was growing up, but we never got individual pets, nor did i ever realize that was a serious or expected option. My youngest sister got some hamsters when she was a teen tho
