I find my own experience useful to try to communicate exactly how the cultural conservatism was directly enabled by religion, it's not like a separate fluke. But the general thing applies to religions all over the world, and I don't think they're separate flukes either.
I grew up with many practicing Jewish families and didn’t see any oppression. Feels like strictness is there more important variable not religion.
My family was super strict with me and both of my parents were atheists. Has nothing to do with religion.
Lots of bad in religion but it provides meaning and comfort to a huge number of people. Now that they lack religion in the west they also lack meaning and purpose, as well as a fundamental shared morality. The world is not a better place without religion.
