one of my special frustrations are people who believe institutions know best and if you are not getting their approval that you must be bad in some way. There's no better way to show complete lack of understanding of the actual work than by defaulting to institutional authority.

I do actually think this is goofy RE you but the IRB stuff is a direct outgrowth of like Nazi experimentation or the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment: that is, it’s intended to restrain institutions and protect individuals when there is a knowledge/power imbalance or unclear risk

Yes, the Tuskegee stuff *was* an attempt to do good, IRB requirements are the solution to that sort of catastrophic good intent But from FetLife’s perspective, what is the potential good to its users of you doing surveys versus the potential harm?
