ppl seem to have a moral intuition that working hard should be rewarded with higher pay, while ignoring that working *smart* is a thing. I prefer a world where working smart is rewarded, cause rewarding the *hardness* of the work means we're incentivizing effort, not efficiency!

And I feel like working smart is innovating and error correcting to solve problems.

Agree - hard work is the reward in itself. Making money is different/separate.

If two jobs are equally vital to the health of a society, but one job is easy and another requires great effort, it is necessary to offer more pay to induce workers to accept the greater difficulty.
People don't reward hard work because it is hard but because it is necessary.

We also reward people for working long hours (in the form of hourly wages) instead of doing a job quickly and efficiently. It stems from the belief that people are owed a debt based on what they sacrifice (or even what they need) as opposed to the value of what they produce.

yea my entire motto is work smarter not harder and sometimes it looks like i’m slacking off bc of this, when in reality i’m just making things more efficient lol

Ultimately pay is tied to economic value, not how hard or efficient one works. The problem is when people assign moral value to their idea of proper compensation. So yes teachers make what they deserve and so do pro sports players and big name actors.

I don't necessarily think this is untrue. But I must say that most of the people who say "work smarter not harder" are just lazy and that hurts the narrative.

Very narrow field for working smart in the marketplace. You either have to be self-employed or STEM.
