My experience isn't unique though, there's soooo many people out there for whom god-based religions really fucked them up. like the anti gay thing was ubiquitous even without whats traditionally considered abuse. Much of my own abuse came from ppl taking God *really seriously*
I think I'm bothered that ppl seem to dismiss my rough upbringing as being a weird fluke of abusive parents. Some of it was that but a huge chunk of it was directly caused by and enabled by their religious beliefs.
this was also the case with my parents, I don't think it's that god-based religion is bad per se but that a lot of ppl don't have the intelligence / whatever else to interpret it in a sensible way and just twist it around their own biases / tendencies

I feel like most of liberal style modern American society has been exposed to defanged religion, and I agree defanged religion is way less scary and is more of a personal lifestyle choice.
But a ton of religion elsewhere is not defanged
